The Harlequin Restaurants Banner

The Harlequin Restaurant Group Empire started in 1984, when Charan Gill MBE and his business partner, Gurmail Dhillon purchased the Ashoka West End in the Kelvingrove area of Glasgow. As the two entrepreneurs shifted the emphasis from fire to flavour, the Glaswegian palate became more discerning, and the group, grew from strength to strength.

In March 2005, Harlequin, changed hands in an 8 million deal which saw Charan Gill hand over the ownership of the group to long-term business associate and entrepreneur Sanjay Majhu.

Not content with dominating the Indian restaurant market Sanjay is taking Harlequin Restaurants to new places. There are now 17 restaurants in our group, and this includes Italy Express, our first unit to offer Italian food. Other new additions to the group are the new Ashoka Express, and the exciting new Masala Jak's that has opened in The Quay, Glasgow. There are even rumours of a new European Style of restaurant opening in Bearsden.

"We take great pride in our food and have made many pioneering leaps in the world of Indian Cuisine. Having recently obtained the HSQC seal of approval, we are the only Indian restaurant in Scotland to meet the stringent requirements of catering at the Hilton group of Hotels. This high standard can be seen in every one of our restaurants."
